Artist Statement

‘Sugar n Spice..not everything nice’ Exhibition

Jan is on a continual search to learn thru experimentation, observation, and study of other artists’ works to find better means to express the impact of her experience of the world around her and to share this experience with others.

Living a fairly isolated life style on a 20 acre property near the river west of Katherine she indulges herself in her passions of country and horses which she expresses in her painting, photography and learning the art of dressage.

Her portraits have attempted to go beyond the photographic ‘stilling’ of one moment, rather to express an amalgamation of the animated expressions of many moods and characteristics making up that person.

Her landscapes are also expressed rather as a portrait, attempting to again capture the moods and nature of that particular part of the country. The mark making, sensitive or harsh, the lusciousness of the medium, colour, whether bold or subtle, are considered as important as the image itself if not more so. In the end Jan wants the viewer to share the experience of the texture and colour as much as the original inspiration.
