Sebastian Harris - Musician

Sebastian Harris was born in Tasmania, grew up in Hobart and moved to Melbourne at the age of eight. He studied classical music composition at the Victorian College of the Arts, then after some years of teaching piano moved to Katherine for three months for a change, to work and be nearer his sister. Four years later he keeps forgetting to leave.

As a composer his main achievements are performances of his compositions by Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Sydney Sinfonia, and a commissioned work performed in the New Music Network’s Concert Series 2010. He is working on developing his skills in composing opera, and has been accepted to attend a full rehearsal period of “Madama Butterfly” in Sydney with Opera Australia late in 2012, to learn more about the form and observe how a professional opera company works.

He has played in orchestras across Melbourne, Sydney and NT including with Co-opera’s touring “La Traviata”, and in various ad hoc ensembles on bassoon, piano, contrabassoon, singing and goodness knows what else. He produces performances of his own works alongside other works as per a chosen theme in The Soiree Series, a series of community concerts in unique settings around the town that are popular with locals.

He composed sound design and music for the Darwin Festival show Head Full of Love (2010) written by Alana Valentine and directed by Wesley Enoch. He also composed original music and sound design for Gorrdondolmi in the Katherine Fringe Festival (2011), also performed at the Darwin Festival (2011) and arranged for orchestra (2012). He has one formal piano student but prefers just to engage with locals and musicians for the satisfaction to be found in music, and to contribute to the community.

He has studied local Aboriginal languages and briefly linguistics and is almost as passionate about language, community and social justice as he is about music.

The Northern Territory suits him, as its "anything-goes-if-you-organise-it" philosophy allows him to live out his dreams, and is characterised by a vibrancy impossible in other places he has lived. He encourages local musicians and others who are interested in music to comment on Twitter using the hashtag #MusicInKatherine.
