KRA House Band General VibeLeft to Right: Drummer Matthew Knight, lead guitarist Lee Hubble aka The General, and bass player Penny Fawkner.

Introducing the new KRA JAM NIGHT house band, the talented and completely cool GENERAL VIBE!

Lee Hubble aka The General, Matthew Knight and Penny Fawkner have united to form Katherine’s latest line-up, GENERAL VIBE. Although a new band formation, and this comes straight from the horse’s mouth (the horse in this instance being Matthew), these guys have roughly 300 years combined musical experience (not sure of the maths here)!Matthew Knight has a long history with music. In our interview, Matthew let it slip that as a teenager he appeared on ‘New Faces’, a popular Channel 9 prime time talent show then hosted by Bert Newton in 1994. New Faces saw the likes of contestants such as Paul Hogan, Daryl Somers, Keith Urban, and Peter Andre. Unfortunately for Matthew, he didn’t win New Faces that evening, but he sure gained a little notoriety with the girls and it certainly didn’t hurt the popularity of the band he was playing in at the time, the Highway Dogs.Matthew has played in popular NT bands such as The Track, Indecision, The Three Amigos and until just recently, The Longhorns. Matthew first met Lee Hubble aka The General back in the days of the band The Track, which some may remember played for well over a year every Friday night at the infamous Last Chance (now the Mahogany Bar) in Katherine. Apparently they were wild, wild days. Oh to be a fly on the wall! The General and Matthew also played together in The Three Amigos and The Longhorns.

The General heralds from musical royalty, so it is no surprise that he’s been playing the guitar with ease since the age of eight. His father performed as a Bush Balladeer for as far back as The General can remember, and at 79, still performs at the Tamworth Music Festival every year. It was in 1984 that The General first started playing with the Darwin based band called Ambush. 1987 saw The General play and sing lead in the Woodstock Country Band and in 1993 The General left Darwin and went on tour nationally with the band called Slippery Sand. 1995 was the year that The General went solo; and the last six to seven years The General and Matthew have been playing together. A match made in Heaven we would say judging by the gigs they’ve had, including the Katherine Music Muster for the last five years, Katherine Show, Katherine Races, Cattleman’s Ball, Relay for Life, Recognise, and for the last four years, the RAAF Fishing Club Competition at RAAF Base Tindal.

Now to Penny. This is the first official line-up with Matthew and The General for Penny Fawkner. However, Penny has her own long and accomplished history with music and in the creative arts. Penny took piano lessons as a child, taught herself the guitar, sung with various choirs and was part of a Church band on the NSW Central Coast which went on to record. In more recent years Penny has played at the Barunga Festival and the Darwin Festival with Tom E Lewis. The Darwin Festival was the first time Penny met and played with Matthew. Touching upon the creative arts side of Penny, Penny has had an amazing career as a commercial sculpture and was involved with special effects production which saw Penny work on many films both nationally and internationally. WOW Penny!

Given their dynamic personalities, their individual expertise, the combined experience, the fact that Penny, The General and Matthew are simply passionate about music and enthusiastic about sharing that passion and expertise with the next generation of musos – the General Vibe is going to set the vibe around town.

2015 will see the General Vibe pen some songs of their own and put together the beginnings of an album as well as perform, which they do so very well. Kudos to great music.
